IMPORTANT FACT: New Businesses have a 50/50 Chance of Surviving
for five years or more...
In doing some research for this newsletter (see Resources below) I came across some very interesting and encouraging articles. The latest statistics from the Small Business Administration (SBA) show that "two-thirds of new employer establishments survive at least two years, and 44 percent survive at least four years." This is a far cry from the previous long-held belief that 50 percent of businesses fail in the first year and 95 percent fail within five years.
...the latest statistics are a much more accurate assessment of new business success rates, and that "as a general rule of thumb, new employer businesses have a 50/50 chance of surviving for five years or more."
Another interesting statistic...
In the past 15 years, there has been a 50 percent increase in the number of self-employed women in Canada, and one million Canadian women will own a small business by 2010, according to a report released by the CIBC, "Women Entrepreneurs: Leading the Charge". There are now 800,000 women business owners in Canada and the number of women-owned businesses is growing 60 percent faster than those run by men.
